Sandy started playing music when she was old enough to lift the lid on the piano and pick out tunes by ear. In 1996, she started playing upright bass. She's been playing professionally since 1998.
In the spring of 1994, she wrote her first song. In the fall of 1994,
she was a finalist in the Walnut Valley Songwriters / Composers' Showcase
with her second song, "Cabin on the Prairie". She was a finalist
again in 1997 with "Apache Plume". She also co-wrote a collection
of scary songs for children, with Patrick
Bone
,
a Scholastic Book author. In the summer of 2008, she co-taught a songwriting
course, "Hook Rhyme and Singer," with Christy
Wessler
at Swallow Hill. Her songs are featured on Colorado
Sandstorm Music Publishing.
Sandy played bass in a number of bands and for a number of performers. She was the "bass wench" of the Colorado Renaissance Festival from 1999 through 2004. She has "retired" to concentrate on her songwriting.
Although she can be heard on over 15 CDs, her latest CD, "I
Wanted to Fly," is the one that makes her proudest. She wrote
half the songs and co-wrote the other half with
Ernie Martinez
,
J.J. Fraser
,
and B. J. Suter
.
Four of the songs were included in
Colorado Bluegrass Music
Society
compilation CDs. One was a Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival New
Songs contest alternate. Several are getting airplay on KDNK, KOLT FM,
WGOE, KVMR. WVOF-FM, WRSU-FM, Erin Radio, Heartland Public Radio HPR2:
The Western Channel, Boy radio stations, and Boston Pete station 4.
Both the CD and the song "Already
Gone" made the Top Ten charts in the May-June 2010 issue
of Rope Burns, the trade publication for Western music.
