Johnny 3 Note is a Denver-based band whose modern acoustic music is rooted in progressive bluegrass and branches out to encompass country and light rock.
The band’s members include Kathy Whitworth, the smallest but loudest—and definitely most attractive—member of Johnny 3 Note. Her punchy lead vocals and precise harmonies are counterbalanced by the voice of John Cross, whose 3-note vocal range gave the band its name. She plays mandolin and guitar.
John is featured on mandolin and guitar and has played many instruments in numerous bands over the past 20 years, including mandolin for White Sands and fiddle for Lucky LaRue.
Larry Gilmore played bass, from the east coast to the wilds of Idaho, for 25 years with an electrified washtub, which he perfected to cover three octaves, before getting serious with the bass guitar. He provides a solid underpinning for the band’s driving instrumentals and poignant ballads.
Mike Fraley is a well-known Colorado musician with 25 years’ experience in the country, rock, and bluegrass genres. He sings and plays guitar for Johnny 3 Note. Echoes of Tony Rice can be found in his powerful vocals and guitar breaks.
Pat Barrett adds extra spice to the band’s arrangements with his shimmering Dobro solos and fills.
Over the past few years, the band has been playing at numerous area venues, including El Rancho, Nissi’s, Mead Street Station, Ironworks Brewery, White Fence Farm, the Acoustic Music Revival invitational summer series, and festivals at Granby and Lakewood.
Johnny 3 Note is available for weddings, birthdays, corporate and special events.
